What is LARPing?
LARPing stands for Live Action RolePlaying and, in the case of Travail, is a type of interactive theater and sport where participants portray fictional characters playing through fantasy stories. Players wear costumes and have the option to participate in “boffer” combat with safe foam-padded weapons. Travail is more than just combat, and offers players the opportunity to go on adventures, learn about the universe and its diverse worlds and characters, solve puzzles and mysteries, and much more. Travail encourages you to not just write your own character, guided by us through our character builder tool, but also provides the option to write the unique world that your character is from. There are numerous staff-written worlds that you can choose for your character to be from, but we want you to feel empowered to customize your experience and contribute to the story of Travail.
What If I’m Not Interested in Combat?
Our goal at Travail is to have as much content involving combat as not. Combat is opt-in and you can participate as much or as little as you’d like to. We want to offer a broad range of activities for attendees to participate in, and there will never be a time where combat is the only activity available.
The Travail Community
We are committed to fostering our community through staff-led initiatives. We want everyone to feel welcome to come play the game and tell stories with us. Here are a few of our community initiatives. You can learn about others on our community page.
Come Try Travail!
Travail offers a number of discounted community tickets to our events on a sliding scale based on need. NPCs always play Travail for free and we provide breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning and dinner on Saturday evening. No one on the Travail staff except the managing members of the LLC has access to information about who has purchased community tickets and there is no application process for purchasing one.
Welcome!
The Event page is designed to be a complete, step-by-step guide to attending your first event and give you an idea of exactly what to expect. It will also contain photos of what you’ll see when you arrive and information on which staff members to check in with to help you get situated.
Costume Library
Travail has a costume library of shirts, pants, cloaks, hats, belts, pouches, weapons, shields, and more that are exclusively available to players for the purposes of borrowing for an event. We want to offer the option to come try out the game without having to commit to purchasing all of the gear ahead of time.
Travail is for Everyone
The Travail universe is designed to be diverse, and that means that we want as many voices as possible contributing to it. Travail employs sensitivity readers, diversity consultants, and diverse writers as our promise to the community that we are committed to this community initiative. All of these individuals are paid market value for the work they do for Travail.
Travail is proud to be holding our weekend-long events at Ye Olde Commons in Charlton, MA
Event Registration
For community ticket availability please visit the store page. Community event tickets are available 3 weeks before the event.
Join us at Ye Olde Commons November 16-17, 2024 for a Game Day hosted by the Travail staff. This ticket is for all attendees. This ticket includes a bed and dinner on Saturday. The usual ticket price is $80. If you are eating meals provided by the game and are able to, please consider contributing an extra $20 towards the cost of food ($100 total).
The staff unanimously decided to host this event in place of the scheduled weekend-long event. We want to put some goodness and light into the world right now instead of playing villains for the weekend.
